Overall Objective
The overall objective of the organization is to promote industrial development in Tanzania through applied research leading to evaluation and development of technologies and local materials to be used in industrial processes.
The specific objectives of the organization are: -
- To carry out and promote the carrying out of applied research designed to facilitate the evaluation, development and use of local materials in industrial
processes.
- To research into local and foreign industrial techniques and technologies and evaluate their suitability for adoption and use in industrial production.
- To promote and provide facilities for training personnel for carrying out applied scientific and industrial research.
- To operate documentation system to disseminate information on applied research.
- To provide technical services for industrial development
- To provide technical capacity to mitigate industrial pollution.
TIRDO Programmes:
- Research programmes;
TIRDO links research to socio-economic activities by working with other national research institutions and universities to transform the results from national and international programmes into practical solutions to problems facing the manufacturing indusry.
The research programmes at TIRDO are centred in the following areas:
- Material science technologies,
- Information and Communication technologies,
- Fibre technologies (textile, leather etc),
- Food processing and Biotechnology,
- Renewable energies
- Accreditation of Laboratories
TIRDO is in the verge of accrediting its laboratories for ascertaining the quality and safety of the products from industry and entrepreneurs for market access. Laboratory accreditation will support the competitiveness of Tanzania enterprises by enabling exporters to have their products tested domestically rather than relying entirely on tests in recipient countries. Laboratory accreditation is one of the requirements for competitive market and international recognition. TIRDO has already accredited the food and microbiology laboratory on five methods of analysis and is in the process of accrediting three other laboratories in the areas of Materials testing, Environment and Chemistry laboratories.
- Technical Support to Industry
Industry and service sectors are provided with technical support services. The services rendered in terms of research projects and physical tests aim at increasing production capacity and quality of their products. Transfer of technology is given priority and innovations made are used in industries.
Those services include non-destructive testing (NDT) for industry structures and equipment, pollution measurements and energy audit, improvement of welding techniques, instrumentation and equipment maintenance, food microbiological analysis and analytical services. In solving technological problems, industrialists are supported in selection or adaptation of available technology or transfer of technology for increased production efficiency.
