Through collaboration with international agencies and from self income generation, TIRDO has facilities which are in good physical condition, acquired more equipment and instruments which are effectively used to develop technologies and provide technical services.

Food and Microbiology Laboratory

The laboratory has state of the art equipment which includes: Electronic Balances, Incubators, Autoclaves, Ovens, Colony counter, Water baths, PH meters, Viscometer, Stomacher. The equipment are used for the performance of food and water analytical services of different kinds of samples and hence serve the manufacturing industries in the services rendered.
The laboratory is accredited since year 2009 by the South African National Accreditation Systems (SANAS) a global accrediting body and given the accreditation No. T0 326.
As such the laboratory is recognized as a competent laboratory globally which offers good quality testing services at international level.

Agrotechnology and Industrial Chemistry

The laboratory has state of the art equipment which includes Computerized Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS), UV visible spectrophotometer, ovens, Balances, Water Distiller, PH meter, Bomb Calorimeter, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Deionizer, Water Bath etc which are used in chemical analysis of different materials.

Environment

The laboratory has state of the art equipment which includes:

• Combustion Gas Analyzer which measures the pollutant gases such as CO, NO, CO2, NOX, SO2, NO2, H2S, and Hydrocarbons emitted from boilers, engine generators, furnace, turbines and incinerators.
• Dragger Pump with detector tubes which is used to determine ambient pollutants gases like CO, Methane, Hydrocarbons, NO, NO2, NOx, SO2 , O3.
• Dust Samplers (Micro dust pro; Dust track and Min Volume Air Sampler) which are used to determine dust (particulate matter) as PM10, PM2.5 and TSP.
• Environmental Air Quality meter with Sound meter (Noise meter) which is used in measuring Noise levels, Relative Humidity, Light intensity, Temperatures and Air velocity.
• Multiprobe systems for analyzing physical parameters from portable and waste water samples.
• X- Ray Fluorescence machine (XRF machine) which is used to analyze metals from samples of solid and liquid matrix.
• Photometer which is used to analyze nutrients (i.e., metals) and COD from water samples.
• Lux meter which is used in determination of light intensity.



Materials Science and Technology

The laboratory has state of the art equipment which includes

• Portable industrial x-ray machine which is used in internal inspection of welds, casting, forgings and machine parts.
• Magnetic Particle which is used in determining surface inspection on metals and concrete
• Ultrasonic flaw detector which is used in internal inspection on metals and concrete
• Cover meter which is used in detection of reinforcement bars in concrete
• Boroscope which is used in internal surface inspection in pipes



Pilot Plants

The pilot plants are designed to nurture entrepreneurs through incubation and training on technologies for quality improvement. They serve as tools for technology transfer.

Machine shop has TIG, MIG/MAG welding machines, gas welding equipment, bending and rolling machines, shearing machine, pillar and bench drill, milling machine, surface and cylindrical grinders, tool and cutter machine. The workshop is capable of welding non ferrous materials like aluminum, cast iron and stainless steel.

The wood workshop is equipped with machines such as crosscut machine, thickness planner, saw bench, mortiser, tenoner, vertical spindle moulder, sander and bandsaw which are used for training on manufacturing quality wood products like computer desk, cabinets, ceiling repair and installation, countertop, window and screen fabrication and assembly of manufactured furniture.
